How to Use the TI-84 Calculator — Complete Guide

This guide covers common TI-84 tasks using familiar key sequences. Physical models and the browser calculator can differ, so use your course instructions when exact behavior matters.

Getting Started

Press ON on a physical calculator to power up. 2nd accesses secondary functions, while ALPHA accesses letters. Use MODE to check Degree/Radian and other settings before a calculation depends on them.

Graphing Functions

Press Y=, enter a function in Y1, then press GRAPH. Use WINDOW to set viewing bounds or ZOOM6:ZStandard for a common standard window.

Statistics

Press STAT1:Edit and enter values in L1. Then open the STAT CALC menu and choose 1:1-Var Stats for common summary statistics.

Open the statistics guide →

Matrices

Use 2ndx⁻¹ (MATRIX) on models that use that key path. Define a matrix in the EDIT tab, then return to the home screen to use it in supported matrix operations.

Reset & troubleshooting

If a calculator behaves unexpectedly, first check the mode, the expression, matrix dimensions and graph window. A full RAM reset removes stored RAM data, so use it only when you intend to clear that data.

Exam rules

Calculator rules vary by assessment and can change. See the dedicated exam page for current SAT, ACT and AP guidance and official policy links.
